Last One Picked, First One Picked On:
Playing with friends is a daily ritual for most children. But kids with learning disabilities are often isolated and rejected. Rick Lavoie addresses the social problems these children face — and offers some practical solutions for parents.
Every child has experienced embarrassment or rejection in social situations. But kids with learning disabilities are often isolated and rejected, and sometimes have a particularly hard time making and keeping friends.
Host Richard Lavoie, a nationally-known expert on learning disabilities, explains why this happens - and what parents or teachers can do to help children improve their social skills.  4 hours PD credit

The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child
Motivation is the key to learning. But very few parents and teachers have an effective arsenal of techniques at their disposal.
"If he only would apply himself..."

"She can do it if she puts her mind to it."

"He just doesn't seem to care."

"She's just not trying."
Any child can be motivated to learn. Enter educator and acclaimed author Rick Lavoie, who arms all those who deal with children with proven, effective tools and strategies they can use to encourage any child to learn and achieve success.
Lavoie's practical, innovative approach begins with a quiz that helps a parent or teacher identify – using six different possible models — a child's motivational style. He then explores each motivational style in depth, presenting proven techniques, strategies, and scripts that can be used in the classroom and at home to break through a child's apathy and discouragement and inspire him to succeed and achieve.
With empathy and understanding, backed by decades of experience in the classroom, Rick Lavoie gives parents and teachers the key to unlock any child's enthusiasm and responsiveness. The Motivation Breakthrough will revolutionize the way parents, teachers, and professionals reach out to and motivate all children. 4 hours PD credit

Learning For All Kinds of Minds:  Dr. Rochelle Kenyon’s ETW session from 2004 is the basis for this video in-service.  She discusses strategies for teaching adults including those who have difficulty learning.  In addition to viewing the video, participants review her PowerPoint slides for additional information.  Participants will watch the video and complete a post-workshop activity to receive four hours of professional development credit.

Reading:  Taking Adult Education Students to the Next Level:   Presented by the trainers from the Florida Human Resources Development, Inc. at the summer 2004 ETW is the basis for this video in-service.  The video packet is designed to be an interactive, hands-on training containing materials and ideas that teachers of adult learners can transfer directly into their classrooms.

*Transitions CD:  Each AEL program in Missouri was provided with two CDs to use with this activity.  A participant can earn two PD hours of credit by completing the activity accompanying the CD and also found on this website.  The CDs provide a wealth of information about helping an adult student transition to college or work.  Also provided within the information are lesson plans designed to help students achieve their goals.
